Devils’ veteran leadership again shows the way

By at 30 January, 2009, 11:25 pm

Perhaps it was fitting on a night where the Devils honored HOF broadcaster Doc Emrick that tonight’s game actually surpassed last night’s wild win in Boston for drama and excitement - and with the same result in the end, a 4-3 Devils come from behind OT win that was probably the team’s best win at the […]

A showdown that lived up to its billing

By at 29 January, 2009, 9:52 pm

For the first part of the 2008-09 season the Bruins had been nothing short of dominant, tied for the most points in the NHL with 75 in 48 games, including a 18-3-2 record at home.  As a team, Boston was second in goals scored and tied for first in fewest goals allowed.  While a resurgent […]

Road warriors keep winning battles

By at 27 January, 2009, 9:13 pm

After the two-day skills competition better known as All-Star weekend, finally 24 NHL teams including the Devils and Senators got back to real hockey tonight.  Fortunately for New Jersey the break did nothing to stall their hot streak, as they won their sixth straight game in Ottawa by a 4-1 score – giving the team its 30th […]

Picture of the day (and All-Star thoughts)

By at 24 January, 2009, 8:47 pm

Okay who didn’t love Alexander Ovechkin’s final chance in the trick shot competition earlier tonight?  Countryman and former blood rival Evgeni Malkin even helped with the props, which included using two sticks, wearing dark glasses, a dopey straw hat and a Canadian flag on top.  I’m sure the last of those props guaranteed Ovechkin’s second straight win […]

An accomplishment to be proud of

By at 21 January, 2009, 10:55 pm

Flash back to November 15, 2008 for a minute, Devils fans.  Martin Brodeur had gone down to injury just two weeks before and would be on the shelf for the next 3-4 months.   Few thought this proud organization could sustain such a loss for so long a period.  I was just hoping the team would […]

Shanahan’s spectacular debut leads Devils into first

By at 19 January, 2009, 10:20 pm

With all the hoopla surrounding Brendan Shanahan’s insertion into the Devils lineup tonight in Nashville, it would have seemed impossible for his debut to live up to it.
Then again, there’s a reason Shanahan has scored over 650 career goals and is going to the Hall of Fame.
Looking nothing like a player who hasn’t played competitive hockey […]

Devils lineup changes in Nashville

By at 19 January, 2009, 2:56 pm

Well the question has finally been answered as to who’s sitting in favor of Brendan Shanahan for tonight’s game – somewhat surprisingly it’s Jay Pandolfo. Not surprising because of performance sadly enough, Pando looks like he lost a step he couldn’t afford to lose after the injury last year and with the dissolution of the checking line, […]

Devils show no mercy on struggling Islanders

By at 17 January, 2009, 8:38 pm

During the pregame, the Islanders honored both Doug Weight and Bill Guerin for milestone accomplishments. Weight for his 1000th point (only the eighth US-born player to accomplish that feat), and Guerin for his 400th career goal.
Three hours later, that was still the highlight of the evening for Islander fans.
In what seemed more like an exhibition than a contest at times, […]

Winning in Columbus? Yes Weekes Can!

By at 16 January, 2009, 9:02 pm

After going 2-1 on the west coast, the Devils returned east to Columbus for the second half of their six-game road trip against a hot Blue Jackets team that for two periods looked like Ken Hitchcock’s old Dallas Stars teams – suffocating defense, a timely goal and not beating themselves with penalties.
Then in the span […]
